Coding is the process of creating instructions for computers to follow. Just like people use different languages such as English and Spanish, so do programs. Roblox uses the coding language Lua.

In Roblox, lines of Lua code are held in scripts. These scripts give the game sets of instructions on how to give players health points, create a rain of fireballs, or anything else imaginable.

As a Roblox developer, it is currently too hard to test my sound effects in game. I’m working on engine sounds currently, and it’s difficult to gauge how good a sound is without hearing it in game. So every time I want to update my engine sounds, which are split into more than one file to allow the script to mix them depending on the game conditions, I have to upload them all to the site. Given that sound is a hidden core of a game, a game without sound is just not enjoyable. Imagine having GTAV without sound, all those cool explosions would be meaningless. I created a loopable sound and it would be great to see it in my game in development, i unfortunately am not sitting on piles of Robux to see if a sound, well sounds good in. Roblox support was no help at all. They say to click on the develop/create icon but they mention nothing about changing your plan of action if the developer studio pops up instead. If anyone knows how to help with this incredibly sad issue, I'd love a response.

Creating New Scripts

Scripts are commonly created in ServerScriptService, a special folder for holding and running scripts.

  1. In the Explorer, hover over ServerScriptService to see the .
  1. Click the and select Script. This opens the script editor.
  1. Right-click on the Script and select Rename. Type in PracticeScript. Naming scripts is an important way of remember what each one does.

Using the Script Editor

Whenever you create new scripts, the script editor will automatically open up. This is where you will type your code in.

To find the script next time you open up Roblox Studio, click on the name of the script above the game editor, or double-click the script’s name in the Explorer.

Now there are even more ways to express yourself on Roblox with all-new emotes!

We love emotes at Roblox because they’re a fun, meaningful way to interact with other players or communicate with people even across language barriers. Emotes have been around on Roblox for the past several years now, allowing you to laugh, cheer, point, wave, or dance in your favorite games. As we continue to reach more and more countries around the world, we wanted to expand on this system by offering an even greater variety of animations to use and making them easier to discover.

Head to the Catalog now to check out the first wave of emotes that are currently on offer—many of them are available for free to celebrate the launch. What better way to take pleasure in your next hard-earned victory, greet a new friend, or unleash a plethora of perfectly timed dance moves?

Here’s a list of what we’ve rolled out so far (you can preview each one in the Catalog):

…and much more still to come!

Using Emotes

So, how do you show off your new animations in-game? We’re glad you asked! There are now two ways to do it: through text commands in the in-game chat or through the convenient new Emote Menu.

Emote Menu

You can equip up to eight of your favorite emotes from the Avatar Editor, making it easier than ever to activate them while playing a game. They’ll be assigned in the new in-game Emote Menu, which you can quickly pull up either from the top bar or the radial menu if you’re playing on Xbox One.

Chat

If you’re familiar with our original emote system, you can continue using text-based inputs in the in-game chat to activate any emotes in your Inventory even if they’re not actually equipped to your avatar. Just enter /e and then the name of the emote you want to use (for example: /e salute).

Stay Tuned for More Emotes

We’re just getting started. We plan to continue introducing new emotes to give players more ways to show off their personal style. With so many emotes to discover—and more on the way—we’re excited to see players around the world try them out and interact with each other. Enjoy!
